An archer shoots an arrow at a 22o angle to the horizontal. At the top of its motion, the arrow just clears a 36 m high gum tree.
(a) Determine the speed of the arrow when it left the bow. Assume it was shot from 1 m above the ground. 3
(b) How far away is the archer from the foot of the tree? 3
This response will be awarded full points automatically, but it can be reviewed and adjusted after submission.
A helicopter is to drop a rescue package to a group of hikers. The helicopter is travelling at a speed of 15.0 ms-1 at a constant height of 200 m over the level ground.
(a) The pilot wants to land the package right beside the hikers. At what horizontal distance, d, from the hikers must the package be released from the helicopter? 3
(b) What is the speed of the package just before it hits the ground? 2
This response will be awarded full points automatically, but it can be reviewed and adjusted after submission.
While riding his motorbike on a dirt track, Casey Stoner travels over a bump on the track at high speed and launches himself and his motorbike into the air. The launch speed is 15 ms-1 at an angle of 25° to the horizontal.
(a) Calculate the vertical and horizontal components of the bike’s launch speed. 2 (6)
(b) What maximum height does the rider and motorbike reach above the launch position? 1 (6)
(c) For what length of time is the rider and motorbike in the air? 1
(d) Perform a calculation to determine if the rider and motorbike will make it onto the flat section of track after their trip through the air? 1
(e) Later as the motorbike rider continues along a flat section of track, Stoner accelerates from a speed of 7.0 ms-1 to 12.0 ms-1 in 3.0 s. What is the magnitude of his acceleration? 1
This response will be awarded full points automatically, but it can be reviewed and adjusted after submission.
In a circus act an acrobat of mass 70.0 kg is shot from cannon and at the top of their flight they grab a trapeze swing at S. They then use the swing to reach the platform at P. This is shown in the diagram below which is not drawn to scale.
(a) Neglecting air resistance, determine the initial velocity components, ux and uy, of the acrobat after the cannon is fired. 3
(b) The acrobat grabs the trapeze at S and swings up to P. If the radius of the swing is 1.50 m calculate the magnitude of the centripetal force on the acrobat after they grab the swing. 1
This response will be awarded full points automatically, but it can be reviewed and adjusted after submission.
